When you’re a single Mom, you have to stretch the dollar as far as you can. Below are some frugal tips guaranteed to save you money.

1. Look For Manager Specials

Meat is one of the most expensive items on the grocery bill. One consistent way to save up to 50 percent on this expensive item is to look for “manager specials” in the meat department. Almost all supermarkets have these specials. If you don’t see them, ask where they normally put these specials and what time of day they put them out. These are packaged meats that are expiring that day or very soon. They are still good but need to be either be cooked that day or frozen immediately.

2. Buy Meat In Bulk

Another great way to save a lot of money on meat is to buy in bulk. Usually, these are sold as “family packs.” You can buy these big packs and then separate them out into smaller portions and freeze in freezer bags when you get home. This will save you around a ten to thirty percent.

3. Get To Know the Produce Manager

Let the produce manager know that you are a frugal shopper and a single Mom and would appreciate any special deals they may have. Often times, produce that is still good but perhaps slightly wilted or maybe has a bad spot is simply thrown out or taken to a food bank. Produce managers usually have the authority to sell these items at a substantial discount if they have a special customer in mind. You can just cut the bad spot off and use this produce in soups, stir fries, casseroles, etc.

4. Buy Dry Goods In Bulk

Often times, if you buy dry goods like rice, pasta, granola, flour, sugar, etc, you’ll save a lot of money if you buy these items from the bulk section at your supermarket (check the price per pound to check for sure). You can also look for a grocery co-op in your area to save even more money as their bulk items are usually even less expensive than the bulk section at the supermarket.

5. Keep the Kid’s Haircuts Simple

If you keep the kid’s haircuts simple, you can easily learn how to cut their hair even if you have no formal hair cutting training and save a ton of money. Remember too, never cut hair around the time of the full moon as it will grow back faster. You can bribe the kids with a special outing to get them to hold very still for you. You can also do some arts and crafts projects with your girls to save money on hair accessories.

6. Raise Your Own Herbs

Another very expensive item at the grocery store is herbs, both dried and fresh. Luckily, herbs are also one of the easiest plants to grow. You can very easily grown basil, thyme, rosemary, mint, cilantro, parsley, sage, and many other herbs. You can use them fresh and also sun dry them and store them for later usage. Growing herbs makes a wonderful project for the kids also and you can follow this up with cooking lessons.
